DATA SNAP: Australian Aug Unemployment Rate 5.8%

SYDNEY -- Australia's unemployment rate stayed at a lower-than-expected seasonally adjusted 5.8% in August from July. The number of employed fell 27,100, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.

Economists on average had expected an unemployment rate of 5.9% in August, with the number of employed down 15,000.

The number of people in full-time work fell 30,800 to 7.55 million in August from 7.58 million in July, while the number of people in part-time work rose 3,800 to 3.21 million.

The bureau said its seasonally adjusted workforce participation rate, or the proportion of working-age persons at work or actively seeking work, fell to 65.1% in August from 65.3% in July.
