LONDON -- The number of bankruptcy and company winding-up petitions presented in courts in England and Wales in the second quarter of 2009 fell on the previous quarter, Ministry of Justice statistics showed Friday.
In total 3,181 winding-up petitions were presented in the second quarter, compared with 3,461 in the first quarter. This compares with 2,927 winding-up petitions filed in the second quarter of 2008.
The number of bankruptcy proceedings initiated by debtors in the second quarter fell 4% on the previous quarter, while the number of bankruptcy proceedings initiated by creditors in the second quarter increased 9% on quarter, the figures also showed.
In total there were 21,090 bankruptcy petitions from creditors and debtors in the second quarter, a 1% decrease on the previous quarter.
