y Mining Production Down 13.2% On Year

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's mining production fell 13.2% in May from the year-ago month, led by declines in output of gold and zinc.

The National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Friday gold production was down 44% from May 2008 to 2,525 kilograms, and silver output fell 3.6% to 225,044 kilograms.

Copper production fell 1.7% to 19,196 metric tons, zinc production fell 21.7%% to 28,535 tons, and lead output rose 10.8% to 10,880 tons.

   Iron production fell 1.9% to 649,491 tons, and coal output    dropped 5.7% to 815,413 tons.
