Any gold experts out there? What’s going on?

Gold rallied quite strongly overnight and I am reading elsewhere that this was because of uncertain equity markets and greater financial uncertainty. The US stock markets, despite 4 consecutive days of losses, aren't exactly collapsing and the general mood in the worldwide economy does seem to be improving. So why the gold buying? Anyone got any insights, technical or otherwise?
